Concerns about Location Services

Some features of GuardShark require you to allow GuardShark to access your device's location. This page describes in detail how your location is obtained from your devices, and which specific GuardShark features will transmit your location to GuardShark.
How GuardShark works
GuardShark is a web application, which means it uses your device's web browser to display user interfaces and send data. A web application is distinct from a "native" application or "app" that you might get from the Apple Store or the Google Play Store. Native applications are programs built to be downloaded and installed on a specific device, such as an iPhone running the IOS operating system, or an Android Device running the Android operating system. In contrast, web applications like GuardShark are never installed on your device. Web Applications run in a web browser like Apple Safari or Google Chrome. GuardShark is a web site. It is not an "app."
Most devices will allow you to add a shortcut to GuardShark on your device's home screen. If you do this, you will see an Icon with the GuardShark Logo appear on the home screen of your device. This does NOT mean that GuardShark has been installed on your device. The Icon is merely a shortcut link to the GuardShark webpage. When you click the icon, your web browser will open and navigate to GuardShark.net. If you want to close GuardShark, simply close the browser window or tab in which GuardShark is loaded, and all connection between the GuardShark server and your device is severed. If you are not actively interacting with GuardShark in a browser window, NO data is being transmitted to GuardShark.
How your location is obtained
When you load certain pages in the GuardShark site, the GuardShark page will ask your web browser to allow it to see your location. If this is the first time you have visited GuardShark, you will know this is happening because you will see a browser dialog box informing you that GuardShark would like to access your location. This prompt will appear because all modern web browsers require explicit permission from the device's user to allow any web page to see the device's location. When you allow GuardShark to access your location, your web browser will provide the GuardShark page with GPS coordinates. It is important to understand the following points about this stage in the process:
- Although the GuardShark Page you have loaded in your web browser will know your location, it does NOT transmit this information to GuardShark.
- Your location wont be transmitted unless you take one of the specific actions that will transmit your location.
Actions that transmit your location to GuardShark
You location data is transmitted to GuardShark only when you take one of these actions:
- When you click the "Clock In" or "Clock Out" button on the Time Clock page
- When you create an Event Log using the Home Page "Critical" or "Routine" Event buttons.
- When you save an edit to an Event Log using the "Event Logs" menu.
- When you click the "Check In" button after scanning a Checkpoint.
Disable Location Tracking
Location services must be enabled for you to use GuardShark while you are working on a Work Site. If you are not working, the simpliest way to prevent GuardShark from seeing your location is to not visit the website and to close any active browser windows or tabs that have GuardShark loaded, but keep in mind that even if you visit the website, your location data will not be transmitted unless you perform one of the actions listed above. You can manage your account settings or review the Privacy Policy without transmitting your location.
If you would like to further ensure that your location is private, then you can disable location services for your web browser or for the GuardShark website by adjusting the settings of your device or web browser. Consult the documentation for your device or web browser for information on how to control access to location services. If you disable location services, you will need to re-enable it prior to using GuardShark during your next shift.
